NAPA, Calif. (March 23, 2026) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team climbed to second place after the first two rounds of the Bridgestone Intercollegiate tournament held in Napa, Calif. on Monday.
UNA finished one-under in round one and at one point, sat in 13th place. In the first round, three teams shot double-digit under scores. In round two, the Lions returned with a 16-under to lead the field in the round.
Only three teams shot under-par in the second round — No. 27 BYU, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
The Lions finished 17-under between the 36 holes played today. The 16-under, 272 team score for the second round becomes the second-best Division I single round team total in program history. It lands three strokes shy of the 269 in the third round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge in 2025.
Three Lions finished in the top six of scoring with senior Xing Luo leading the way at six-under in fourth place. Luo finished second last year at the 2025 Bridgestone Intercollegiate and was the highest finishing NCAA-designated golfer in the event.
Junior Andrew Ferworn and freshman Jedd Brady finished in a tie for sixth at five-under.
The Lions were 20-under when it came to par-5s as a group, best for second across the field. Five eagles were holed out between the five UNA golfers for the top ranking in the category — three more than any other team.
Luo finished with two eagles to tie him for the most among all players, as he sunk one in each round; Ferworn, Brady and Luke Davis each had one, as well.
UNA finished in fifth for birdies as the team totaled 37 during the 36-hole day.
Luo is the top performer in par-5s with an average of 4.00 and his eight-under score.
No. 27 BYU leads the field at an astounding 11-under with Kihei Akina leading the field at 12-under himself. The Cougars sit 11 strokes ahead of the Lions who finished second after two rounds.
The Japanese based Tohoku Fukushi University owned the second spot until a late surge from North Alabama forced a drop to third as Tohoku finished 13-under; San Francisco finished 13-under giving them a share of third.
Santa Clara finished in fifth at 12-under to round out the top five. Cal Poly (-4), Howard (-3) and Eastern Michigan (-1) were the only other teams to finish under par through the end of the day.
"Considering what happened last week and how today started, the guys could have given up," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach Austin Phillips. "Instead, they fought back in the first round before reaching their full potential in the second. I am proud of how they played. We just have to keep it going tomorrow to give ourselves a chance."
