ASUN pegs Xing Luo as Golfer of the Week

Luo breaks Jackson Wedgeworth’s career ASUN weekly award record at UNA

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 27, 2025) – Following a second-place finish on Tuesday, University of North Alabama men's golf junior Xing Luo won the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golfer of the Week award, announced Thursday.

With four career weekly awards, Luo breaks Jackson Wedgeworth's record for the most individual weekly awards in the Division I era. Wedgeworth held the title since 2020 after he earned his third.

This award comes after Luo finished second in the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational this Monday and Tuesday hosted in Napa, Calif. He placed second in the tournament with an eight-under for a total of 208. He shot 68-69-71 throughout the three-round tournament.

His 208 score ties his third best in school history which came this previous fall at the 2024 Turtle Point Invite. He posted a 200 at the 2024 GMAC Invitational and a 207 at the 2023 MartinFed Invitational at Turtle Point.

The Lions struggled at points during this tournament, but Luo was strong throughout. After the first day, North Alabama finished in third after the first round that saw him as high as first. He finished that round with a four-under and led the field with seven birdies.

Luo jumped to second in the next 18 holes with a three-under round and added six more birdies. His final round saw three birdies as he finalized the tournament with a one-under.

The junior from Katy, Texas was dominant when it came to birdies and par-4s. He led all players with eight-under on par-4s at an average of 3.73. The next closest golfer was three-under when it came to those holes.

The Lions accumulated 48 total birdies during the tournament, best for fourth. Luo had a third of that production as he nailed 16 of them, best for first in the tournament.

For the past three tournaments, Luo has finished eighth or better and this is his first top-two finish during the spring. Luo ranked 138th in the nation coming into the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational. He beat out the 85th, 97th, 111th, 128th and 143rd players in the nation. He now is 110th in the nation after the performance.

"His consistency since Stetson's tournament has been great," said The Schmitz Family head coach Austin Phillips. "He continues to put great results and plays with confidence. He has a short turnaround this week, and I believe he will keep it going."

There have been eight different Lions to win the ASUN Golfer of the Week award in the Division I era. This is the 14th ASUN Golfer of the Week award for the men and the fourth for Luo.

This is the second ASUN Golfer of the Week award for the Lions this spring. During the Fall, North Alabama set the record for most ASUN Golfer of the Week awards in a single semester with four. Luo won one, sophomore Andrew Ferworn won two and junior Sebastian Bengtsson won one.

There has never been more than one ASUN Golfer of the Week in a semester at UNA until Fall 2024, which makes this the second consecutive semester to happen. The Lions won three in the month of October alone.

Next up, Luo and the Lions travel to Pawleys Island, S.C. for the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Invite at True Blue Golf Resort on Monday, March 31.
