NOTES

THE RUNDOWN: The University of North Alabama baseball team overcame a seventh inning deficit for the first time this season for a memorable 5-4 win over Belmont at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala. Down 4-2 in the ninth, UNA right fielder RJ Sherwood was the hero. Sherwood doubled with the bases loaded to score two, then a Bruin throwing error led Ethan Walker to touch home for the winning run. The Lions led the Bruins in every batting statistic for the afternoon. Most notably, North Alabama hit 4-for-9 in lead off situations and had five total hits for the game. UNA threw seven different pitchers for the nine innings as Landon Scruggs earned his first win.

SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 25th all-time meeting between the two programs. The Lions are 14-9-1 all-time against Austin Peay with their most recent win coming last season at Mike D. Lane field 14-13. UNA is 4-5 against the Govs since the transition to Division I, with three of their four wins coming in Florence since 2021. The Lions have scored 11 or more runs in three games since the 2021 season as they are 2-1 in those games.
SCOUTING THE GOVERNORS: Austin Peay is 26-7 overall this season, with a 11-1 conference record; best in the Atlantic Sun. The Governors have won all seven of their weekend series this season and have swept the last three ASUN teams. APSU is on a 13-game win streak and their final loss came against the Lipscomb Bisons on March 16 by a score of 8-6. They currently lead the Gold Division for the ASUN.

PACK YOUR BAGS: The Lions have competed in 31 games this year with a record of 11-20 overall
with a 6-6 ASUN conference record. Every game this season has been away from Florence, Ala., even with some 'home games' sprinkled in at Young Memorial Field or Toyota Field. In this, the North Alabama baseball team has traveled 5,250 miles on a bus this season. This does not include the drive to and from hotels or activities outside of getting to the playing field such as places to practice. In all this travel, the Lions have been on the road for approximately 105 hours and 54 minutes before Bellarmine on Sunday. This accumulates to over four days of consistent travel for the Lions.

BATTLE TESTED: The Lions are 11-20 this season heading into the weekend. However, the record can be misleading when it comes to the quality of the ball team. UNA has competed with six SEC schools this season so far with two being No. 1 at the time of competition. Four of the six games saw seven or less runs for the SEC giants. Outside of conference games this season, UNA opponents have a combined record of 225-132. Four of those teams have five or less losses on the season.

ROAD WARRIORS: North Alabama is in the process of building Mike D. Lane Field at Bank Independent Stadium, which is currently scheduled to be playable in April. The Lions will play on the road and at neutral site venues until then. For more information, click here

UP NEXT: After the weekend conference matchup, the Lions host the Samford Bulldogs on Tuesday, April 15 with the first pitch being thrown at 4 p.m. This will be the second meeting between the two this season.
