NOTES
THE RUNDOWN: The UNA baseball team lost its series finale to Bellarmine, 9-6, on Sunday at Mike D. Lane Field at Bank Independent Stadium. North Alabama got a strong performance from second baseman
Tyler LePage, the nine-hole hitter, who hit two home runs. LePage became the ninth Lion this season to hit two or more home runs in a single game. Others to accomplish the feat include
Dylan Coleman, who has done it three times, and
Will Millard, who has done it twice.
Petey Craska,
Nash Rippen and
Wes Walker have each done it once.
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 20th all-time meeting between the two programs. The Lions are 12-7 since 1984 but has only one win over the Bulldogs during the Division I era. After joining the ranks of Division I the two first played in 2019 and the first win came in 2023, 11-10 in Birmingham. Since 2023, the programs have played two games a season before a cancellation in 2025 for the second game. Samford pulled off a late comeback to beat North Alabama in Birmingham in February, 6-5; this was one of the three games with two-home runs by
Dylan Coleman this year.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: These two last met in the early portion of the season when Samford was 2-5 after a tough weekend with No. 9 Georgia. Since then, the Bulldogs have earned a 22-16 record with a 9-6 conference record. Samford has five batters hitting over. 300 for the season with four players owning 10 or more home runs. The Bulldogs are coming off a home weekend against Mercer where they dropped that series. This is the first midweek game on the road since April 21 when Samford lost to No. 6 Auburn in seven innings, 14-2. Jake Souders and Luke Boykin are the names to know offensively. Souders leads the team with .387 batting average, 43 runs scored, 67 hits and 109 total bags; Boykin leads the team in home runs with 14, RBIs with 46 and slugging percentage at .630.
LEPOWER: Junior
Tyler LePage has assumed a starting role for North Alabama at second base while he hits from the nine-hole spot. LePage seemed like the clean-up hitter after he bombed two home runs against Bellarmine on Sunday. Both home runs helped tie the game in each situation with the first being a two-run shot in the second and a three-run shot in the fourth. LePage became the ninth Lion this season to hit for two home runs in a single game this season behind
Dylan Coleman (3),
Will Millard (2),
Petey Craska (1),
Nash Rippen (1) and
Wes Walker (1).
MARGS AT THE MIKE: On Tuesday, the Lions will celebrate Cinco De Mayo at the ballpark against Samford. Free Sunny Margarita Clubtails will be provided for fans' enjoyment while supplies last. Come ready, come thirsty and cheer on North Alabama baseball.
UP NEXT: After their final home midweek of the season, the Lions get on the road to face Central Arkansas in an ASUN Gold Division top-two bout in Conway, Ark. beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.
