LIONS OPEN GSC PLAY WITH 3OT LOSS AT VSU

VALDOSTA, Ga., – Valdosta State connected on 14-of-15 free throws in the third overtime to pull away for a 127-115 victory over North Alabama Thursday evening in the Gulf South Conference opener for both men's basketball teams. The loss set a school record for most combined points in a UNA game, it also snapped a 10-game winning streak against the Blazers.
 
UNA had chances at the end of regulation as well as each of the first two overtime periods. After trailing by as many as 11 in the second half, Valdosta State rallied to tie the game at 78-78 in the closing seconds. The Lions missed a rushed layup at the buzzer to force overtime.
 
In the first overtime, Tavaras Tolliver connected on two free throws with 10.2 seconds left to give North Alabama a 92-89 lead. The Blazers responded with a three-point basket at the buzzer to force the second extra period.
 
UNA led by as many as five in the second overtime before VSU rallied again. With the Lions leading 104-103 Tolliver hit 1-of-2 free throws to extend the lead with 8.9 seconds remaining. The Blazers, however, hot a runner with less than two seconds to go to extend the game once more.
 
In the final period, a basket by Austin Timms tied the score at 111-111 with 2:46 remaining. The Lions would not connect from the floor again. VSU added a basket and free throw to grab a 114-111 lead
Valdosta State grabbed a 114-111 lead with 1:45 left and UNA went 0-for-4 from the floor with three turnovers down the stretch.
 
John Fletcher led North Alabama with a career-high 27 points. He was 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Bilal Richardson added 21 points on 9-of-9 shooting from the floor, but fouled out with 2:34 left in regulation. Timms also scored 20 points while Dimarrio Jackson recorded a 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tolliver rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 11 points.
 
With the loss, UNA falls to 3-4 on the season with an 0-1 mark in GSC play. Valdosta State improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league action. North Alabama will play at West Florida on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at the UWF Field House in Pensacola.
