LIONS GET 91-88 WIN AT JACKSONVILLE

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – True freshmen Christian Agnew and Jamari Blackmon combined for 49 points as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team defeated host Jacksonville 91-88 Wednesday at Swisher Gymnasium on the JU campus. The third straight ASUN Conference victory and first-ever Division I road win gives the Lions a 6-13 overall record and 3-1 mark in league play.

In a game that featured 12 ties and 27 lead changes, UNA went ahead for good with 17.4 seconds remaining. With the score tied at 83-83, Blackmon drove the lane and was fouled after making a shot between two Jacksonville defenders. His free throw gave the Lions a three-point advantage.

The Dolphins were able to score on every ensuing possession, but UNA was 8-for-9 from the free throw line in the final minute of play to seal the win. Fellow freshman Emanuel Littles connected on a pair of foul shots with 2.2 seconds to play to give North Alabama a 91-88 lead and JU missed a shot near half-court at the buzzer.

Blackmon, who had only four points at the half, gave UNA a 34-33 lead at the break with a jumper with 28 seconds remaining. Neither team led by more than six over the final 20 minutes of play.

UNA outscored the Dolphins 15-10 in the first five minutes of the second half to grab a 49-43 lead. Jacksonville, however, responded with back-to-back three-point baskets and later took a 53-52 lead on a dunk by Ohio State transfer David Bell with 11:46 remaining. The lead changed hands 14 more times down the stretch.

After Blackmon gave the Lions the 86-83 advantage, the two teams traded free throws. JU pulled to within a single point before Kendarius Smith added to free throws of his own to make the score 88-85 with 13.8 seconds to play.

The Dolphins cut into the lead after a basket by JD Notae again made it a one-point lead and UNA's Tavon King hit 1-of-2 free throws to make the score 89-87 at the 7.6 second mark. After drawing a foul on the next JU possession, Notae hit his first foul shot, but missed the second. Littles got the rebound and sealed the win after drawing a foul and connecting twice from the line.

Agnew led all scorers with a career-high 26 points for the Lions. The Detroit, Mich., native was 11-of-17 from the floor with four three-pointers. Blackmon finished with 23 points. Smith added 16 points while Kendall Stafford rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 13 points. Littles also finished with a game-high 14 rebounds.

Notae led Jacksonville (8-11 overall, 1-3 ASUN) with 25 points.

UNA will host Stetson on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
