AGNEW’S BUZZER-BEATER LIFTS LIONS PAST STETSON

FLORENCE – Christian Agnew's half-court shot banked in as the final buzzer sounded, giving the University of North Alabama men's basketball team a thrilling 63-62 win Saturday in front of 1,251 fans at Flowers Hall. The 45-foot buzzer-beater was reviewed by officials before standing, to give UNA its fourth consecutive victory in ASUN Conference play. The Lions are now 7-13 on the season and in third place in the ASUN standings with a 4-1 league record.

Stetson led by as many as eight in the second half, and held a 62-60 lead after making 1-of-2 free throws with 14.8 seconds remaining.  UNA turned the ball over on its ensuing possession, but got one more chance after the Hatters missed two more free throws with 6.6 seconds to play.

Agnew tracked down the long defensive rebound following the second miss and dribbled to half court to launch the last-second three-point attempt. The shot hit the backboard before falling through, sending the home crowd into a frenzied celebration.

UNA took a 32-27 lead into the break, but trailed throughout most of the second half after Stetson opened the second period on a 14-0 run. A basket at the 15:06 mark gave the visitors a 41-32 lead.

Tavon King ended the scoring drought for the Lions with a floater down the lane. His basket started a 12-2 North Alabama run as the home team regained the lead. After a basket by Kendarius Smith put the Lions ahead 44-43 lead, Stetson responded with a three-pointer on its next possession.

The Hatters' lead grew to 57-49 with 5:35 remaining before UNA made one last push. A three-point basket by Kendall Stafford cut the Stetson lead to 61-58 at the 1:53 mark. Neither team scored again until two free throws by Emanuel Littles made the score 61-60 with 16.6 seconds to play. Stetson drew a foul on its ensuing and hit 1-of-2 free throws to set up the wild finish.

Smith led four UNA players in double figures with 15 points. King added 14 points while Littles notched a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Stafford rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 10 points. Marques Summer led Stetson (4-15 overall, 0-4 ASUN) with 14 points.

UNA will hit the road for its next ASUN game. The Lions will play at Liberty on Jan. 21. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (Central) on the LU campus in Lynchburg, Va.
