ONEONTA, Ala. (September 24, 2023) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team closed out the first round of the Graeme McDowell Invitational at Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala. with a strong result, starting with a two-under-par 286 total on Sunday. 

 

With the 286 total, the Lions only trail Lamar in the 14-team field, who finished day one with a 10-under-par 278. North Alabama sits ahead of Troy, UAB (B Team), Jacksonville State and UAB (A Team) to round out the top six of the first round. UNA is one of just two teams to finish the first round of the tournament below par. 

 

Freshman Andrew Ferworn led the Lions with a three-under-par 69 first round. With his 67 in the first round of the Iowa Fall Classic and his 68 in the third round of the Argent Financial Classic, Ferworn holds three of the five UNA individual under-70 rounds this season. Ferworn turned in an eagle on hole 16 — the lone UNA eagle on the day and one of just six in the entire field on day one. 

 

Corey Maher and Henry Frizzell, who is participating as an individual, were not far behind, tied for 15th with a 71 in the first round. Dawson Garrett's stellar four-under-par front nine helped him place tied for 21st with a 72. Sebastian Bengtsson is tied for 35th (74), while Eric Luo is tied for 53rd (75) to round out the North Alabama individual leaderboard. 

 

Garrett is tied for the second-most birdies out of any individual in the tournament with six. He also wrapped up the front nine with four consecutive birdies. 
 
Play resumes Monday, Sept. 25 with the second round and concludes on Tuesday, Sept. 26 with the third and final round of the tournament
