North Alabama wins 12th Turtle Point Championship

Lions Team A finished 20 strokes better than second place SE Louisiana

KILLEN, Ala. (October 14, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team closed out its home tournament with a Team A victory at the Turtle Point Invite on Tuesday. This marks UNA's 12th win at Turtle Point in program history and the seventh of the Division I era.

Today also marked the 10th career NCAA win for Austin Phillips, the Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach. This is Phillips' sixth win while at the helm for the Lions; he won four tournaments at Division II Cameron University.

The Lions now claim their second team win of the season alongside the GMAC Invitational.

The Lions finished 20 strokes ahead of second-place Southeastern Louisiana — the only other team to shoot under par in the 54-hole tournament.

Last season, the Lions won the tournament title with a record-setting 25-under performance at Turtle Point. The team finished three strokes shy of matching that substantial record.

The 842 stroke score ties the 2025 GMAC Invitational for the fifth-best Division I three round team total in program history. The Lions earned the best with an 830 at the Golfweek Fall Challenge to begin the year.

UNA Team B turned in a top four finish with a nine-over score, as Belgium native Arthur Estas led the B group with a three-under tournament and four-under for the final round.

Junior Andrew Ferworn led Team A and finished third individually at 10-under (67–66–73). His 206 total ranks sixth-best in program history for Division I three round individual tournament total. Ferworn also ranked third in par-4 scoring (seven-under) and second in total birdies (19).

The Lions Team A thrived at home as they were the only team with a double digit under par score — one of two teams to shoot under par. They led the field in par-3s (eight-over), par-4s (eight-under) and birdies (64). Team A had 17 more birdies than SE Louisiana who finished in second for the category.

The top four from day one stayed the same after the conclusion of day two with SE Louisiana, Samford A and North Alabama Team B rounding out the top four.

Evansville fell out of the tie with UNA Team B to finish fifth, as New Orleans jumped three spots on the final day to tie with Evansville. Missouri State fell out of that three way tie a day ago to finish seventh at 25-over.

Alabama State made a buzz as they moved up one slot overtaking the Samford B team. Alabama A&M and Wallace State finished the field, respectively.

UNA Team A led the field with 64 birdies and has led every three-round tournament this season in birdies. The Lions had 70 at the Golfweek Fall Challenge with the 64 today being the second most.

Ferworn led the way with rounds of 67–66-73 to finish 10-under after the third round. Freshman Jedd Brady is the next highest for sole possession of 14th with a four-under tournament of 71-69-72.

Senior Xing Luo shot 3-under (69–72–72), as he hit a monster birdie putt in front of the UNA men's basketball team on the 18th hole — the senior followed with a flex before collecting the ball.

Senior Sebastian Bengtsson finished in 18th with a one-under final round helping him rise six spots. His five birdies in the final round gave him 14 for the tournament — best for eighth across the field. Redshirt freshman Walter Waineby finished two-over for the third round, placing him in 21st.

Team B finished a strong tournament, as well. They received a top-three placement for par-5s at 13-under and had two eagles for the second-most in the field. Team B could not let Team A have all the birdie fun, as they sunk 40 of their own. Team B finished third with 163 pars for the home tournament.

Estas entered the final round at one-under and with four birdies, helping him move into 15th.

Redshirt freshman Luke Davis rose seven spots for 26th with a one-over day and 35 on the back nine. Senior Blake Henriques took 32nd with a three-over round, while senior Corey Maher finished with a four-over day for 43rd.

Senior Cory Abbott finished with a one-over day — his best round as a Lion with a 73. He even walked it off with an eagle on the seventh hole to call it a day.

"This tournament will always be special to me," said Phillips. "It's our home tournament, it's the tournament my kid was born in, and I was able to have my whole family there. It was a special day. The guys did what they needed to defend our home turf and just keep building momentum as the season moves on. Good performances from everyone on both teams just shows the depth of talent."

North Alabama has a week off before closing its fall season at the Florida Atlantic Invitational on Monday, Oct. 27.
