North Alabama places two teams in top four at Turtle Point

Lions Team A finished 22-under after day one, three strokes shy of last year’s record tournament

KILLEN, Ala. (October 13, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team has two teams sitting in prime position heading into the final round of its home tournament, the Turtle Point Invite, on Monday in Killen, Ala.

UNA Team A sits first place after two rounds, highlighted by junior Andrew Ferworn's second-place showing and 11-under score through 36 holes. UNA Team B finished the day tied for fourth as true freshman Arthur Estas is currently one-under tied for 16th.

Last season, the Lions won the tournament title with a record-setting 25-under performance at Turtle Point. This season, the team sits 22-under through 36 holes played and has the opportunity to break last season's threshold.

The 554 overall score for North Alabama Team A is the best Division I Two Round team total in school history. The recent best was the final two rounds of the 2022 Grover Page Classic in Jackson, Tenn. — North Alabama won that tournament.

Junior Andrew Ferworn had a shortened stay at the Cullan Brown Collegiate last week due to weather where he finished as a runner-up. This week, he continued his strong year as he sits in second behind Alabama individual Brycen Jones by three strokes.

Ferworn also ranked second in par-4 scoring (7-under) and total birdies (14), both just behind Jones.

The Lions played 36 holes on Monday and will play the final 18 of the home tournament on Tuesday.

The Lions Team A thrived at home as they were the only team with a double digit under par score — one of three teams to shoot under par. Team B shot six-over to place fourth on the first day along with Missouri State and Evansville.

Southeast Louisiana and Samford Team A claim second and third, respectively. Both made pushes in the opening round for first, but North Alabama never relinquished its day one lead. Samford Team A was the closest within the first 18, down by two strokes.

However, the Lions Team A combined for 23 birdies in the opening round to take off with the lead; they totaled 44 for the two rounds.

Team A led the field in par-3s (two-over), par-4s (six-under), par-5s (14-under) and birdies (44) for the day. Par-4s had a 13-stroke differential between North Alabama and the second-best team in that category, Evansville.

Missouri State, Evansville and North Alabama Team B all tied for fourth after one day at six-over. Both Missouri State and Evansville had rough round one openings but returned under-par for round two. UNA Team B stayed steady with a two-over and four-over, respectively.

Senior Corey Maher led Team B in through the first round with a three-under with five birdies while Estas had a two-under and four birdies.

Samford B sits seventh at nine-over with New Orleans a stroke behind in eighth. Alabama State, Alabama A&M and Wallace State round out the field, respectively.

Team A had all the right mojo for the home tournament as every golfer finished with at least one full round of under-par.

Ferworn led the way with rounds of 67–66 to reach 11-under. Freshman Jedd Brady is the next highest in a tie for 10th with a four-under two rounds with cards of 71-69.

Senior Xing Luo went three-under with a 69-72 while redshirt freshman Walter Waineby finished two-over for the opening round but bounced back with a three-under second round — he notched 26 pars best for fifth in the field.

Senior Sebastian Bengtsson finished in 24th with even par. He finished seventh in the field with nine birdies. His front nine in round two tripped him up some, but returned with a clean back nine of three birdies and six pars.

Team B had a successful day, as well. They sunk 26 birdies, best for fourth in the tournament.

Headlined by Estas, the freshman finished fourth for par-5s at five-under while adding an eagle for the day.

Maher worked quite well on the par-3s as he finished fifth at one-under for the category. At one point, the senior led in first and stay in contention in the top-five for most of the first round.

Redshirt freshman Luke Davis and senior Blake Henriques tied for 34th with two-over day. Both rose substantially in the final round, as Davis broke even with Henriques adding four birdies to go three-under with a 69 in round two. Henriques added 25 pars to his arsenal which gave him ninth amongst his peers.

Senior Cory Abbott added two birdies and 17 pars for the 36-hole day.

"(We had) a slow start but the guys really played well after that," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach Austin Phillips. "We still have to push hard tomorrow, but I'm excited what we are doing. We need to get after it tomorrow and pull away."

North Alabama closes out the home tournament tomorrow at 9 a.m. by way of shotgun start.
