NOTES

LAST TIME OUT: The University of North Alabama men's golf team finished sixth-place after a weather-riddled day that concluded the Cullan Brown Collegiate in Lexington, Ky. The tournament was limited to 36 holes after darkness and inclement weather disrupted play over two days. The opening rounds ended Monday with several teams still having holes to complete in the second round. The University of Kentucky, which hosted the event, moved the conclusion of round two to Tuesday morning. A torrential downpour canceled the final round, but round two was completed. The Lions placed sixth among a competitive field that included multiple power-four programs. Headlined by Mississippi State and Kentucky, UNA finished ahead of Penn State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Michigan. UNA's team total of 569 marks the ninth-best 36-hole score in the program's Division I era. Junior Andrew Ferworn set a program record for the best 36-hole individual score with a 137, while senior Sebastian Bengtsson's 142 ranked fourth in the same category.

DÉJÀ VU: Entering the home tournament last season, Andrew Ferworn cleaned up the Cullan Brown Collegiate with an individual win and an ASUN Golfer of the Week award. The now-junior enters the 2025 home tournament with nearly the same results – a runner-up finish in a shortened stay in Lexington with an ASUN Golfer of the Week award in tow. In the 36-hole tournament, he finished with a score of 68-69=137. He led the field in par-3 scoring with a 2.63 average — three-under — and had nine birdies for fourth-most across the field. Ferworn was one of three golfers to shoot under-par for both rounds in a field of 90 golfers.

THE BREAKDOWN: North Alabama is the host school for the Turtle Point Invite, where 10 teams will compete. The Turtle Point Invite tees off on Monday starting at 9 a.m. by way of a shotgun start. The course is a par 72 and spans 7,035 yards at the Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club.

THE FIELD: Ten teams will participate in this tournament. North Alabama splits into an A and B team for this one. Four Alabama-based schools will journey to Killen including Alabama A&M, Samford, Alabama State and Wallace State. The rest of the field includes Evansville, Missouri State, New Orleans and SE Louisiana. Six teams, Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Memphis, Troy and Vanderbilt, send individuals to compete.

AIMING FOR THE 12th: The Lions turned in the individual and team crown winners last season en route to their 11th Turtle Point victory in school history. The team finished with a 25-under tournament for a total score of 839; at the time, it became the third-lowest three-round total for the Division I era and broke the course record by five strokes. Alongside the team victory, Ferworn added another individual win for the first UNA golfer to win back-to-back tournaments in the Division I era. North Alabama added the runner up with then junior Xing Luo at eight-under.

10x WINNER: The GMAC Invitational was a special one for the team — not only because it was a nail biter but that it was their 10th team crown during the Division I era and the fifth-under current The Schmitz Family head coach Austin Phillips. The Lions' first championship season in the Division I era came in Spring 2019 where they won their first tournament at the North Alabama Spring Classic. UNA has seven wins during the fall semester and three during the spring; the other two spring wins came at the 2023 Gulf Coast Collegiate and the 2024 Savannah Intercollegiate. Currently, Phillips is one win shy of his 10th NCAA victory. He had four at Division II Cameron University and has five with North Alabama at the Division I level.
