Riverside, Iowa (September 6, 2023) – With three individuals among the top 10 golfers, the University of North Alabama men's golf team placed third in the Iowa Fall Classic at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Austin Phillips's first match as the head men's golf coach.

The Lions had an opening round score of 278, which tied Iowa State's first round for the best team round of the tournament. UNA shot a 294 and a 296 in the second and third rounds to finish at four over par for an 868 total. Iowa State medaled first in the event at four under par with an 860 total. Iowa was the only other school to have a better score than North Alabama at two under par for an 862..

UNA is followed by North Dakota State, Wright State, Drake, Southern Illinois, St. Thomas, Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, Green Bay and Eastern Illinois.

Eric Luo and Sebastian Bengtsson were the Lions' top individuals in the tournament, both finishing with a three-round total of 214. Both Luo and Bengtsson finished the tournament tied for fifth. North Alabama freshman Andrew Ferworn rounded out the top 10, tied for ninth place with a 215. Henry Frizzell completed the match tied for 34th with a 225 while Dawson Garrett tied for 60th with a 234. UNA freshman John Logan participated in the tournament as an individual and tied for 29th with a 223.

North Alabama had three of the tournament's 10 golfers that finished the day under par in Luo, Bengtsson and Ferworn. Luo finished the first round with a 67–a career low.

The Lions' next match takes place on Sept. 10-12 in Choudrant, Louisiana in the Argent Financial Classic hosted by Louisiana Tech at the Squire Creek Country Club.
