JONESBORO, Ark. (October 13, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's golf team got off to a stellar start in the opening round at the Lady Red Wolves Classic on Monday at Sage Meadows Golf Club in Jonesboro, Ark.
The Lions started with four birdies out of the gate and ranked as high as second place early in the first round before settling into 11th after two rounds. The Lions are still in contention for a top-half spot, heading into the final round just four strokes back of seventh place and 12 strokes back of sixth.
With an 8 a.m. shotgun start, UNA's team started on Holes 11-14 and finished on perhaps the toughest holes of the course — Holes 5-8. The Lions finished 12-over after one round, but made corrections the second time around and shaved seven strokes off for a 300-293 two-round score.
The second round 293 (+5) was UNA's best round at Sage Meadows — a course the Lions have played in each of the last four seasons. The Lions had a round of 295 last season and rounds of 296 and 297 over the last three seasons.
Leading the charge was redshirt junior Kerigan Klauber with a career day, shooting five-over in the first round and three-under in the second round to settle at two-over-par 146. The three-under par 69 was the third-lowest round in school history, tying Jackie Klemm's 69 at the Hoover Invitational in 2022. The school record is 67 set by Allycia Gan in 2023.
Klauber overcame a challenging first round with a stellar second round, totaling six birdies and just three bogeys. Every other hole was parred. On the 18th hole, Klauber started what would become a four-hole birdie streak to start five-under. Her 69 card shot her 41 spots up the leaderboard to 27th place after two rounds.
Klauber is tied for fifth among all players through two rounds with nine birdies.
True freshman Lisa Palmgren is just two strokes back of Klauber in a tie for 40th at four-over-par 148. She finished steady with rounds of 75-73 to rank among the top half of the field. She finished the day with five birdies on five different holes, including an impressive par-3 birdie on Hole 11 to close the second round. She did not have anything higher than a bogey on the day.
Junior Ava Schwartz got off to a stellar start and ranked among the top golfers through the first few holes. She's currently settled into the middle of the pack with a card of 74-76=150 for a tie for 53rd. The Texas native started with a birdie and was two-under through the first 12 holes in round one. She finished with four birdies with two in each round.
Just one stroke behind Schwartz is true freshman Kiersten Riggins, competing for just the second time in her college career. She had a two-round card of 74-77=151. She also finished with four birdies on the day, including three in the first round. Outside of one double in the opening round, Riggins had a fairly steady card with 22 pars.
Sophomore Sirichaya Chanpen rounded out the UNA lineup with a card of 78-75 to sit in a tie for 70th. There are 102 golfers in the field, putting her near the middle. Chanpen overcame a challenging first round to add three birdies in the second round. She carded one birdie on hole six — a hole that caused problems for most teams in the field.
Chanpen, who is known for her ability to thrive on tough holes, joined Klauber as one of the few players to record a birdie on hole six. For every team in the tournament, this combined to be the hardest hole with an average score of 4.64. This hole saw 13 birdies, 88 bogeys and 25 double bogeys (or worse) in 204 attempts.
Golf power ULM sits atop the leaderboard with a 559 (-17), followed by future UAC opponent Little Rock at 571 and Memphis at 574. Everyone else is even or over par, including Morehead State (576), West Georgia (578) and Missouri State (581).
In-state schools UAB and Troy are tied with host school Arkansas State for seventh just four strokes ahead of UNA at 589. Samford is two strokes up on UNA in 10th at 591, followed by the Lions at 593.
UNA holds a six-stroke lead on Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Austin Peay. The rest of the field includes Utah Tech, Mississippi College, Murray State, Southern Illinois and Illinois State. All five have 600 or more strokes over two rounds.
The Lions return to action tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. UNA will play holes 9-11 to start alongside Utah Tech and Samford.
