Five UNA Golfers named GCAA Golf All-America Scholars

North Alabama is one of 24 schools across the nation to have five recipients

NORMAN, Okla. (July 29, 2025) – The NCAA Division I Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars were announced today with North Alabama having five golfers honored.  Senior Chase Kaiser and juniors Sebastian Bengtsson, Blake Henriques, Corey Maher and Xing Lou from the University of North Alabama.

Kaiser, Luo and Bengtsson earned the program's first GCAA All-America Scholars award last season and enjoy a second honor this season. Henriques and Maher are both first time winners.

North Alabama is one of 24 NCAA Division I schools to have five or more recipients of the award, a list that includes UConn, Vanderbilt, LSU, Baylor and Mississippi State.

To be eligible for Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their associate's degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they must participate in 50 percent of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.

Bengtsson, a junior from Helsingborg, Sweden finished with four top-10 finishes this season and seven total top-25 finishes. He earned his first career ASUN Golfer of the Week award after his 10th place finish at the FAU Golf Invitational on Oct. 28.

Luo won an individual crown at the GMAC Invitational. The junior was a four-time ASUN Golfer of the Week winner, which is now most for a Lion during their career. The junior had seven top-10 finishes for the year with five of the last six finishing seventh or higher.

He ended the year with a fourth-place finish at the ASUN Championships and made the ASUN All-Tournament team. After the ASUN Tournament finish, he became the first ever Lion to appear in the Division I NCAA Regionals in school history.

Kaiser had two top-15 finishes this year with an eighth-place finish at the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge on March 31. He finished with a six-under and finished with a 210-overall score for the tournament, his lowest as a Lion.

Henriques competed in 10 of the 11 tournaments this season with a top-15 placement at the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge on March 31. The transfer junior shot a 65 in the opening round of that tournament which is tied for the lowest individual round in Division I history at UNA.

Maher competed in 19 rounds this season with an average of 75.84 through his time on the course. His best showing came at the GMAC Invitational where he finished 36th, rising four spots on the last day with a 73-73-71 three round tournament.

"Extremely proud of the guys for this accomplishment," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach, Austin Phillips. "It is not easy being a student athlete and these guys are doing it at the highest level. To have five academic All-Americans shows the team's commitment to their academics. We can't wait to see what they do next year."

All five golfers led North Alabama, according to available records, to the highest ranking in school history at 78th in the nation. The Lions finished fourth at the ASUN Tournament, another team high as their previous best finish was fifth.

While their achievements on the course were spectacular, in the classroom was just as remarkable. The men's golf team finished with the highest male GPA amongst North Alabama teams. They boasted a collective 3.64 GPA, best for fourth amongst all sports.

UNA's men's golf program now has eight GCAA All-America Scholar selections during the Division I era, all coming within the last two seasons.
