ATHENS, Ga. (May 18, 2026) – University of North Alabama men's golfer Andrew Ferworn finished tied for 65th after the first day at the NCAA Regionals in Athens on Monday, May 18.
This was the first day of the three-day tournament, playing 18 holes. Ferworn is the second consecutive Lion to make the Division I NCAA Regionals in program history, joining teammate Xing Luo as the first.
Ferworn competed with No. 13 seed Howard's Francisco Perez and Kennesaw State's individual Shaun Cook. Wright finished tied for 72nd for the day at eight-over while Schmidt finished tied for 52nd with a three-over.
The junior had four bogeys on the front nine to finish four-over with a 39. However, he returned with a phenomenal final nine as he parred the first five holes before a birdie on the 15th. He added two more pars before a double bogey on 18 to close out the day.
Ferworn, the No. 207 ranked golfer in the nation according to Scoreboard Clippd, finished higher than 11 power-four golfers. Ferworn finished better than the No. 96 golfer in the nation in Auburn's Billy Davis and the No. 125 golfer in Vanderbilt's Michael Riebe.
His 65th overall placement is tied with two other golfers in Harvard's Leuan Jones and Southern Miss' Benjamin Fernandez.
Only 28 golfers finished under-par out of the 76-man field in Athens. Louisiana's Malan Potgieter is the highest individual not tied to a team as he sits tied for second at five-under.
The top five teams and the top individual not affiliated with those five teams will qualify for the national championship.
"Not his best day today, but he has a lot of golf left," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach, Austin Phillips. "He will keep playing hard, and I know he can put a crazy good round together"
This tournament continues for tomorrow at 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20.
